1st International Salivary Gland Disorders Seminar of Thessaloniki

The 1st International Salivary gland disorders seminar was held in the Papageorgiou Hospital amphitheater of Thessaloniki, Greece under the auspices of the Hellenic Salivary gland Society and the 2nd Academic ORL Dept, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Given the significance of the event there was a large attendance from all the regions of Greece and also some participants from the surrounding Balkan countries. 

Prof J.Constantinidis, the president, commenced on Friday afternoon by welcoming delegates (over 140) and outlining the broad details of the program. There were sessions on pediatric salivary disorders, imaging of salivary glands, sialendoscopic techniques, autoimmune diseases, surgery of the salivary glands and radio-chemotherapy of salivary maligmant tumours. 

On Saturday there was a live surgery presentation of a superficial parotidectomy (surgeon: Prof J.Constantinidis) from the OR of the hospital, followed by the international session of the meeting in which two distinguished guest speakers gave their lectures about management of drooling and parotid surgery in children (Mr H. Kubba, Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow, UK) and minimally invasive techniques in salivary glands (Prof J.Zenk, Erlangen University, Germany) along with a lecture of Prof J.Constantinidis on facial nerve rehabilitation on parotid surgery, Prof P. Maragoudakis on minor salivary gland tumours, and Mrs Misailidou on radiotherapy of salivary gland tumours.

The seminar concluded with a magnificent dinner at the old town center in a friendly atmosphere. Overall the event proved to be an excellent occasion for participants to improve their knowledge in this field. The organizers’ plan is the next seminar to take place in 2013 including hands on sessions.
